Hi Christina,

Sorry for not responding to you earlier. I'm still learning about blogsites and only just realized you wrote! Okay, in answer to your question, for example what we found is that for one of the songs in the karaoke scenes, the problem is that it was too well known for the publishers to grant us permission and copyright for an online video posting. We had asked to post for one year onto one site only (on blip.tv), that the video would be streamed and that (unfortunately for us) we had a nonexistent music budget. I believe it was for any and all of these reasons that we were turned down by the music publisher. We would have loved to use it but in deference to their decision, it wouldn't be right and it doesn't look like we'll be able to raise up any additional funds in the forseeable future to help make this a reality.

So our next option is to take out these songs and (hopefully) replace them with permissible songs, most likely from starving artists hungry for publicity and exposure (because we can offer little else).

Anyway, if you know of any artists (particularly Asian American artists) who'd like to be considered, please send them our way! And please tell them our preference is for narrative songs, songs that tell a story, a journey or reveal an emotion and that will fit in with what we've already shot. Thanks!

Hi Marie,
When I was doing my first short movie (for school) I first learned about those horrific licensing issues. It really was frustrating. I wanted to do things right, and my budget has literally laughed in my face. I But I found out there are alternatives, that is, If you're willing to use less known music as a soundtrack. there are sites today, like www.youlicense.com where you can license music for these kind of usages directly from the artist, through the site. So what did you do? did you just remove those songs from the scene or replaced them with others? Good luck!
